Notes & Sources

  1. National holidays are set by federal law (Lei 662/1949, with Our Lady of Aparecida added by Lei 6.802/1980). Reference list maintained by ANBIMA, the financial-market self-regulatory body, for the national business-day calendar: anbima.com.br. The federal government additionally publishes annual optional points (see note 3).
  2. Black Consciousness Day (20 Nov) became a national holiday from 2024 under Lei 14.759/2023, replacing its prior status as a holiday in selected states only.
  3. Carnival (16-17 Feb) and Corpus Christi (4 Jun) are federal optional points (pontos facultativos), not national holidays; whether they are observed as days off is decided by each state and municipality. Brazil applies no substitute day when a holiday falls on a weekend, so the Proclamation of the Republic (Sun 15 Nov) is not made up in 2026.
